Last night was the Substance/ Mountaineer Spring 09 awards banquet. We ate food, dispersed awards, and announced the new editors for next fall. The first set of awards were for 'Best Blog', and I am very happy to say I took first place, along with Michael's Lifestyle: Food and Wine blog . I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it :) and I am exciting to only continue to develop Haute Campus.

I also took home second place for "Style 101", and Aldo won first place in photography for my spread in "The Rites of Spring". I've already expressed how much I love working in the journalism program and I can't wait for fall semester to bring you something even better for Substance Fall 09 (and I am also considering writing for the Mountaineer) as well as trying my hand at broadcast journalism. But for now, lets enjoy the summer!

Recently I've been shopping around for sneakers for my Mexico City trip at the end of the month, as I don't think a pair of leather moccasins will translate very well with a full week of sight seeing. Jack Purcell sneakers have always been my favorite but the two pairs I have are pretty beat up. I was looking through their website and came across these guys. I was on Amazon.com looking for a Mexico City travel guide as I just found out I'll be spending the week there for my birthday :] I've been bugging my mom to take me as she goes every year for business, and this time I finally got my wish! I'm super excited to see the sights and report back on what's haute in Mexico City, so stay tuned for that!

After finding a few good travel guides, I also stumbled upon this little treasure - Fashion Illustration by Fashion Designers, by Laird Borrelli. This book is a collection of original sketches by 50 fashion designers including Phillip Lim, Karl Lagerfeld, and Peter Som.

Yesterday after working in the studio I thought it would be more fun to go shopping than sit in grueling LA traffic for an hour. One of the girls at Resurrection had mentioned a store next door called Parke and Ronen, so I decided to check it out. What I found was a great collection of tailored shorts varying from fun stripes to solid khakis and needless to say, I wanted every last pair. There forte however, seems to lie in swimwear. From board shorts to bikinis Parke and Ronen know whats up. Now if only I had a bangin'-beach-ready-bod to pull a pair of those swim shorts off.

So i'm constantly trying to think of ways to keep my outfits fun and interesting, and as I was coming up for my outfit for nana's 80th birthday party I thought, well why not a boutonniere? So I call up my local florist and order one over the phone. When I go to pick it up I find my self standing in line with high schoolers picking up flowers for prom dates. Then I thought, since when did boutonniere have to be restricted to school dances and weddings? I'm going to try and wear them when I go out or dress up. Let's see how long I can keep it up. Do people actually do this and I just don't know about it? If so, please let me know. And doesn't Stephanie look so cute in her vintage sailor dress?

These past few weeks have been crazy, but I was finally able to catch the HBO film Grey Gardens, staring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang. The story is based off of a 1975 documentary film depicting the lives of Edith Beales, aunt and first cousin to Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis. It is a beautiful story of a New York socialite mother who's fortune has run dry, and of a daughters missed opportunity. So I am no film critic, but if you haven't seen this yet, I highly recomend it. Drew Barrymore is stunning as always, and the costuming throughout the movie is just gorgeous.

Last night was the big Venus Revisited event at Resurrection, which we spent the last few weeks preparing and grueling over. Everything went over pretty smoothly and we had quite the turn out. My post was to greet guest as they came and to show them in. So who was among the first to arrive? None other than style icon, and personal sex god, Tom Ford. So I tried to keep my cool as I greeted him into the event.

As he came out to pick up his car from valet I knew it was now or never, this was my chance. I casually walk over and asked if he had enjoyed the portraits and he started talking,

I was so dazed I can't even remember what he said. Then I told him that I was wearing him (his fragrance) he looked at me, laughed and said "well you must smell good then". Yes, I am embarrassing, but I don't care, I MET TOM FORD. This totally made the next three excruciating hours of my post worth it.

Fashion for the Sole

So I've been collecting TOMS for a little over a year now and I have so many pairs it's ridiculous. Although a splurge for a pair of these won't make you feel so bad, as it is TOMS mission to put shoes on the world (or at least, those without). When you purchase a pair of TOMS, they donate a pair on your behalf to a child without shoes. Pretty cool right?

TOMS has had a few artist collection, and most recently, a line with Ruby, Ralph Lauren (the pairs pictured above). I love this collaboration because as amazing and comfortable as TOMS are, they can sometimes be too casual for the things that I wear, this collection adds just the appropriate amount of preppy for those khaki and polo days.

Today I fiiinaly got my filthy car a nice wash, went to the shoppes and stopped at BN to look for a mothers day card. I browsed the magazines and was of course drawn to the GQ with Zac Efron on the cover. It's been a while since I've read a GQ since I switched my subscription over to Details. My favorite thing wasn't the Zac Efron feature, but instead a smaller one on Paul Rudd as the last feature in the magazine. When I saw these pictures I flipped out. Pink poodles and Paul Rudd! Oh man I love it.

Remember when men used to pride themselves in they way they dressed? And it wasn't considered 'metro-sexual', or 'effeminate', it was just men wanting to look sharp all the time? Well, I guess most of us aren't old enough to remember (including my self) but it begs the question of how the sartorial male died, and American masculinity took over (bbq stains on my white tee shirt- masculinity). This is something I am interested in researching and finding out. Luckily, along with old photographs to remind us of a simpler time, we have conceptual shoots like these that make me long for the return of the Dandy male.

Last night, one of the finest people I know returned home from a four month journey around the world, my dear friend Jillian. When it comes to the Anthony's (well, Jan specifically) everything is done in style. So true to form, we greeted Jill with a limo and a poppin bottle of bubbly. After hugs and tears we instincivley sent the limo driver to In-N-Out for some cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes. Welcome home Jilly! I love you!

Today was beautiful. Is beautiful. The weather's amazing, I just want to be outside all day. I only went to my morning class, had lunch with mom (and she bought me a Ralph Lauren shirt, sooo cute ) and now I'm hanging out with Ivette as we contemplate getting up and getting ice cream and deciding what to wear to Ave. tonight, hahaha. I went shopping all weekend and picked up everything I'm wearing here. First is the amazing Magda Berliner embroidered tweed boy blazer that I mentioned on one of the previous post that I got at the sample sale. Magda is amazing, I fell in love with the blazer when I first saw it and she basically just gave it to me. Super super happy. everything else is H&M and the driving mocs are Banana Republic. Ok, wrapping this up and enjoying some more of the sunshine :] I should have a really good Ave post tomorrow. Michelle never disappoints.

Current object of my desire (among many) - these Masion Martin Margiela shoes. I first saw them in Paper fashion spread, and I was instantly drooling. I mean, how cute would those be in the summer with shorts?? aaah, a boy can dream, can't he?

Although there's no new Margiela in my life, I did score the most awesome embroidered tweed boy blazer from the sample sale we hosted yesterday and I can't waaait to share. And to make my long day even better, I came home to a new Penguin bowtie!

The museum is currently in transition replacing the Art of Two Germany's with Pompeii and a couple others, but even though alot of wings were sectioned off we got to see a lot of cool stuff.

I recently wrote a style piece for Substance Magazine about the style essentials, and everything a woman should have in her wardrobe year-round. One of which, is the frame bag. About a week ago (Easter Sunday), Stephanie, Matt, and I finally made our way down to the famous Rose Bowl flea market. It was a treasure trove of everything vintage, from designer clothing, to furniture. It also housed some vendors who make their own things, like Courtney Prince for example, creator of Doloris Petunia, a collection of beautiful handmade accessories. Upon seeing some of her pieces, I knew they were worth mention. She explained to me how each piece is unique because of the materials used to craft them, for example, the necklace pictured on the left may be made out of a broken pocket watch, and old brooch. You could just sit and gaze at these necklaces for a while because they are all uniquely crafted, and in a way, tell their own story. After all, everythings better with a little sentimental value, and Doloris Petunia already provides that for you.

Cover Girl

For those of you who don't know, Running in Heels is a reality show which depicts the journey of three interns at Marie Claire magazine, which airs on the Style Network. If I had a guilty pleasure this would definitely be it. The show was slightly cheesy, and the girls were kind of ridiculous. You never know when they are fighting, or when they are friends, but still I found myself tuning in every sunday to watch (maybe feeling like I could somehow relate?)

Tonight's season finale ended with one lucky girl landing a position at MC offered by the editor in chief herself. I won't say who it was incase you haven't been following (although I'm not sure why you would start now) but I must say Talita is my favorite :]

So what happens when good style and great music take center-stage? A most unforgettable of evenings.

Once front-woman of the hit band Rilo Kiley, singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis graced Pomona with her presence last night at The Glass House. Noted for her stylish stage presence and love for vintage fashion, Jenny took the stage wearing high waisted tweed boy shorts with a matching blazer, and green plaid vest. Her sweet redish brown locks cascading from her wide brimmed fedora onto the lapel of her jacket. Although it wasn't Jenny's understadedly chic outfit that stole the show last night, as once she started singing everything else seemed to sort of melt away.

Child actress-turned singer, Jenny Lewis appeared in tons of movies including Troop Beverly Hills, and Pleasentville (and most recently as the assistant director to Bolt). In 1998 she and her friends formed the indie rock group Rilo Kiley. Since, she has contributed vocals to The Postal Service, and took off her solo career with the album Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006.

In 2008 she released her second solo album Acid Tounge and is currently on tour.

I was FINALY able to see her live last night, and my god does that woman have talent. She is one of my favorite artist and I truley consider her to be one of the last great lyricist. You know, when music actually had substance and wasn't just formulated for chart-topping-club-mega-hits?

From the boys (and girls) of Brixton, to the psychedelic sights of the sixties, spring fashion seems to have taken a page from the past this season. From geometric prints and patterns, to flowy silhouettes and structured boy blazers, I'm not sure if I want to skank or mellow out. Maybe it's the new sense of polictical activist that sparked some nostalgia in these designers. Whatever their source of inspiration may be, i'm digging it.

So it's nearly that time of year again. The frost is melting, flowers are budding, and retailers are receiving the bulk of their spring shipments. So put those boots and coat away and get into the spring of things.

Every year, as the new sunshine filters in new sunglasses are in order. Once a year around the same time I allow myself one new pair of sunglasses (this is quite possibly the only splurge I allow myself once a year). Last year was the Gucci aviators, the year before Marc Jacobs shield frames, and this year? The Ray Ban new Wayfarer (2113).

I was absolutely stoked to get these, because as much as I like the Wayfarer, every pair I've tried on has been too small for my face. These have a squarer frame than the original Wayfarer along with spring hinges to accommodate my big head. So overall? The Wayfarer 2113 in tortoiseshell, a classic, timeless, commodity. Until next spring...

3.1 Phillip Lim - Phyll Document Attache

Known for his street elegance, with use of jersey draping and industrial trimming for a casual but cool throwback style, Phillip Lim has grown to become one of the top new influential designers of our decade. Lim was awarded the CFDA award in 2007, which is considered one of American fashions highest honors.

Last spring Lim brought us a collaboration of cool sandals (for both men and women), and now the piece I found myself not being able to live without is this envelope clutch. Simple, elegant, and chic. What more could you ask for?

I really love this understated chicness. Here we have a black textured crop jacket, with an easy linen shirt underneath, followed by a dark blue cigarette leg denim and a black croc-embossed ballet flat. The simplicity of the outfit is great, but there is also a great mix of textures from the jacket, shirt, and shoe. Perfect for spending the morning and afternoon in classes. Ladies, id love to see more of this and less of the UGG and PINK sweat suit combo.
